Benefits of Municipal Policing

Municipal policing is truly community policing.

New Liskeard residents and business owners are very pleased with the quick response time to police emergencies in town.

The Temiskaming Shores Police Service is visible and always there to respond to trouble.

The police station in downtown New Liskeard is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer questions in person.

New Liskeard is a service centre for the entire community.  Each workday, over 2,500 people from across South Temiskaming come to New Liskeard for work, school, errands and recreation, increasing the daytime population to 7,500.

There is much to be said for having a dedicated, local police service focused on ensuring residents, businesses and visitors remain safe in the district’s busiest centre.

As a municipal police service, the Temiskaming Shores Police take direction from the local police services board, with a majority of members appointed directly by City Council.

The police services board has the authority to prioritize budget items and ensure that local concerns are being addressed.

As with all municipal police services in Ontario, the Temiskaming Shores Police have agreements with the OPP to provide specialized services when necessary.   These agreements allow the Temiskaming Shores police to focus on community policing, while having provincial police resources for special cases.

Temiskaming Shores Police officers have and maintain the same high level of training and qualifications as all police officers in Ontario.
